RICHARD O’FEREZ

Richard is a late bloomer running to keep up. He’s possessed of a spirit of fun and he’s very hard to truly bring down, but sometimes it seems that the universe is going to try to anyway. Not quite a nerd, he was never one of the ‘cool kids’ either. Of course, in the era of nerd chic, this isn't so much of a problem.

One of the group house residents. He sometimes gets scared talking to Carrie because he wonders if she’s setting him up for a joke-fall. Richard and Midori used to date, once upon a time. He now likes her as a friend, but jokes aside, their history is behind them now and they are complication-free. More or less.

Richard is a waiter at Janeane’s, he and his friends’ frequent haunt.

CARRIE PARKHOUSE

Another of the residents of the house, Carrie walks a curious line between old-fashioned and refined, and modern and ill-disciplined. She has a nasty sense of humour, a never-ending flow of quips, sarcasm and puns coming from her lips. After all, she figures, if you fire enough of them off, one of them’s bound to hit.

Carrie is the only one of the residents not dating someone, and she’s got no real interest in doing so, either. This usually frees her up to fly solo and be immature while her friends are worrying about their relationships. At least, that's how she feels, though people tend to hit her if she says it out loud.

Carrie teaches computers at a local technical college, a career she has no real idea how she got herself into.

MIDORI CHIKAMIZU

The third of the three group house residents. She’d like to be fussy, she’d like to be prim and proper, but it’s just not her. While it’s not uncommon for her to go through fads of regimented cleanliness, organisation or fitness, it’s just as common to find her on the sofa nursing beer. She rounds out the usual pattern of the residents: that if an issue is contested, there will be one on each side, and another on the fence.

OK with the fact that she once dated her housemate, she's now quite happy to go out with Carlos.

Midori works at Female-Call, a wide-ranging ladieswear shop.

AKANE CHIKAMIZU

Midori's younger sister. A bubbly sweet young thing who is forever hanging out at the group house. When teamed up with Carrie, can also be immature – a relationship at last partially born from being the only two not dating anyone.

While no wallflower, she’s not quite so experienced in the world as the other five, and is often found going wide-eyed or not wanting to know the details of someone’s exploit or dangerous thought-process.

Akane is a university student, though it’s usually hard to tell what she actually studies besides cafés and other students.

CARLOS ESPOSITO

Carlos must be missing out on something, somehow, but he’s not sure what. It’s really just that he feels like he misses out on things because he doesn’t actually live at the house. He actually lives elsewhere, but tends to be at the house a lot because his friends and girlfriend (Midori) are there.

Good-natured yet cynical, he sometimes appears self-centred, but it’s more that he misses some of the subtleties of human interaction. This can exasperate him. Peaks between lazy and incredibly restless. Enjoys his lifestyle, though, and is in no terrible hurry to change it.

Carlos works at a record-cum-import store, which gives him maximum opportunity to criticise customers' tastes.

VICKI CASTLE

Like Carlos, Vicki doesn’t actually live at the house, but is quite often found there - mostly because she's dating Richard. Has a very positive outlook on things, but get a bee in her bonnet about something and she can have real trouble calming down. The unofficial ‘steady hand’ of the group, being more ‘caught up’ than Richard, more level-headed than Carrie, less excitable than Midori, less cynical than Carlos and more focussed than Akane. She can be impulsive and has a slight sense of daring. Occasionally embarrassed by accounts of things she was willing to do while drunk.

Definitely prefers fun to work, but knows that the latter is often necessary. Her necessary work comes from a tech support helpdesk.

WANDIN & BURRIGAN

Technically Midori's pets, these two are the cats that call the house home. (Well, really they call it 'meow'.) Wandin is a smaller ginger feline, determined to have his way and who knows he's really in charge of everything - or he should be. Burrigan is big grey fuzzball who just like to purr, eat and sleep. So between them they've pretty much got cat-kind summed up, really.
